The Megaman series had finally gone 3D with the Legends series. The main concern people had was whether the classic Megaman feeling would be retained, and whether the game would be good or not. Well one of these questions was answered with a yes, but the other was not there. However, Legends is not that bad of a game.

The graphics in Legends aren’t bad, but they’re not exactly cutting edge either. The characters look good and look sort of realistic, while the environments are (generally) large. However, a good portion of the game is spent exploring dungeons, and these dungeons tend to look alike. This can get boring to some gamers. The enemies are varied, but in certain dungeons you’ll see the same enemy type over and over. It isn’t bad, but there could have been more variety.

The sound is sort of subdued. There isn’t always that much music going on in the background, and when there is it is nothing that you will remember. What little background music there is becomes very soft once you start to move your character, so you don’t notice it. The sound effects are pretty nice, from the sound of Megaman running along to hearing when an enemy approaches. The game has voice acting but it is not that good. Megaman and Roll just sound different than you would expect, and the voices don’t fit in.

The gameplay in Legends is not too bad. There are usually two types of gameplay, either exploring a dungeon, or exploring a town. There are also boss fights. The dungeon exploring gets boring, as you are mostly searching for items and fighting the same enemies. However, once you get to a boss fight the game gets more exciting. The bosses are very challenging, and will require a lot of skill to beat. Some are very frustrating. The town part of Legends feels sort of like a mini-RPG, as you can talk to people and buy items. However, since there is only one town this part of the game is not as frequent. The controls are good, but lack the feel of the classic Megaman games, which may disappoint some people. Megaman just seems to move too slowly, and the camera is a little slow sometimes. There is a lock on feature, but this can confuse you.

The presentation part of Legends isn’t too bad. The story is not that interesting, as it just has you searching for clues related to a mysterious treasure. There are some sub-quests that are interesting though. These range from finding and disarming bombs before they blow up a building, to racing an obstacle course in a certain amount of time. These diversions can be fun, and will take your mind off the main game for a little while.

Megaman Legends is completely different from the old Megaman games, for better or worse. While it’s not a great transition into 3D for the “Blue Bomber”, it’s still a pretty good game. Worth buying if you need a new game, but otherwise rent it first so you know what you’re getting into.
