Breath of Fire was one of the premier RPG series on SNES form
the beginning of the system’s life. The game was actually published by
Squaresoft, even though Capcom develops the game. While that duo of game makers
may no
longer work together, the result of the two companies really shows in BOF.
The graphics in BOF are obviously rivaled by those shown in
BOF2, which is also on SNES. While this is some competition to it, the game
overcomes it and proves that it can be a worthy quest. While gamers used to 3D
games may dismiss it as outdated, the sprite characters will surely bring
nostalgia to any longtime gaming fan. Of course, if you are a gaming fan who is
still playing the SNES in 2002 the graphics probably won’t matter to you. But if
you are looking for an adventure, don’t overlook BOF.
The sound is also plain because of the systems sound
capabilities. While they are fairly simplistic, this is not too disappointing.
The only bad part is that many of the background themes are repeated in
different dungeons, so there is not really a lot of variety in the music
selection.
The quest is very long and the characters are likeable. You
really start to feel like you want to continue the quest, almost as if the
characters really do have emotions. This kind of writing is great. The dungeons
are varied and some of the puzzles like areas are well thought out and fun. The
only flaw when walking around is that the default walking speed is slow and
there is no option to run. Also, the random battles start to become annoying, as
they are too frequent.
While BOF may be relatively outdated as it is on the SNES, it is
worth looking for if you are want a new RPG to play, simply want nostalgia, or
love the SNES. However, if you are a gamer accustomed to 3D graphics, be sure to
try this before you get it. Overall, a very satisfying adventure for the SNES
that is still worth playing today.
